The client
Kyndryl® is the world’s largest provider of IT infrastructure services. Formerly part of IBM, Kyndryl serves clients worldwide, helping them design, build, manage and modernize their mission-critical technology systems.
The challenge
Following its spin-off from IBM, Kyndryl needed separate HCM and payroll systems to support the standalone business. Operating in over 80 countries, they had a complex network of 47 different payroll vendors which needed to be reviewed and consolidated.
They asked Change Associates to help lead the change programme.
What we did
We assembled a team with deep expertise in global time, attendance and payroll processes and the systems and vendors Kyndryl was working with.
We started with a discovery phase, reviewing the payroll operations, suppliers and systems in each country and understanding Kyndryl’s requirements. This enabled us to recommend the best strategy for each territory, and identify opportunities for consolidation and process improvement.
Our team planned the programme of work to migrate each payroll. This included working closely with the client and multiple external vendors to ensure all systems were set up and rigorously tested, all the integrations were working properly, and data was migrated accurately and on time to ensure no impact on the regular pay runs.
This meant considerable change for the payroll processing teams in every location, which met with understandable resistance. We worked with these teams to help them appreciate the benefits of the change, understand the new processes and systems and prepare for the transition.
The result
- Every payroll was successfully migrated, and all employees were paid correctly and on time
- Consolidation of vendors reduced the number from 45 to 23, and resulted in simpler, more cost-effective processes
- There was a reduction in manual processing due to increased automation
- Local payroll teams reported feeling confident in the new processes
- The process gave Kyndryl the evidence and confidence to launch a second phase of payroll consolidation.
