The challenge

After developing a new strategy and launching a broad business transformation programme, the HR team wanted to improve organisational effectiveness. They aimed to understand their current organisation better, and to develop an agile and efficient structure underpinned by consistent principles.

They valued Change Associates’ experience with other luxury brands and asked us to help.

What we did

We began by training the senior HR team in organisation design and effectiveness, creating a shared understanding and language for the project.

We ran workshops to develop and enhance organisation design principles based on best practice.

The principles were designed to improve three key areas of organisational effectiveness:

  • Strategic alignment and resource allocation
  • Organisation structure and efficiency
  • Accountability and cross-functional collaboration.

We tested these principles with senior leaders, who approved them.

We took time to understand the wider business operating model, culture, organisation structure and functions, and the priorities for the new strategy and transformation.

This was followed by a diagnostic analysis of 20,000 roles across 40 locations around the globe using the industry-leading organisation analysis, design and planning platform, Orgvue. We assessed the impact of applying the new organisation design principles in each function and identified several opportunities for improving organisation effectiveness.

Working in partnership with the HR team, we made recommendations, including quantifying potential cost savings. For example, we identified many one-to-one reporting lines, suggesting redundant hierarchies and opportunities to design more interesting roles and reduce costs by creating larger teams.

The result

  • The leadership team endorsed and adopted the new organisation design principles
  • The business had a detailed understanding of the organisation structure and cost
  • The HR team felt better equipped to drive the organisation effectiveness agenda
