The challenge

Following the Savile scandal, the BBC wanted a consultation on people’s working experience in the corporation. The project needed a sensitive approach. Change Associates was asked to help.

What we did

Dinah Rose QC, a barrister with expertise in discrimination and employment law, was asked to oversee what became known as the BBC Respect at Work Review, conducted by Change Associates.

We ran a series of interviews and focus groups, scheduled to maximise participation while ensuring we could meet the BBC’s tight deadlines. A confidential email address allowed for anonymous contributions.

The result

In total, we received input from 930 freelancers and staff at all levels. We analysed the data and delivered a report to the Board, highlighting key findings and recommendations.

• The BBC accepted our analysis and conclusions. Our conclusions were endorsed by the unions also supported and endorsed.

• BBC employers were soon able to see positive changes happening because of the review.
